Hi Laura

My response would be to consider what your friend wants from this particular system. If she can live with a small HD, one marginal display (if it is the stock agp card), and only wants to run 9.2 capable programs, it's possible that it could run as it is, or with small changes. But 9.2 alone is limiting. Since she doesn't have the original disks, as a bare minimum, she'll need to source a suitable OS9.

You also need to consider your (and her) present level of expertise in refurbishing this particular computer, your willingness to take the time to research and purchase and experiment and work through the frustrations, and your tolerable levels of frustration. And of course the budget she has to spend, and the access you have to replacement parts. It has been my experience that if your level of expertise is lower (as mine is), you'll generally need to pay more for the parts to be sure that what you order is what you need. (the additional cost of having someone hold your hand). Finding the resources to be allow you to troubleshoot or specify replacement components that you are not completely familiar with can be a real problem, as you may encounter compatibility problems, or worse.

If this is intended to be a learning experience, you've come to the right place to begin, as the archives cover a lot of the "transformation" problems you may encounter, and the same people (and more) that built the archives are willing and able to answer any questions that you aren't able to locate in the archives or the other resource sites that they are aware of. Refurbishing can be a rewarding experience, as you will get a sense of accomplishment that you can't get by simply writing a check. Be aware that you may run into a situation that something you may do based on your lack of experience (such as a lack of proper grounding while handling components), could terminate the project due to the untimely death of a major component.

Depending on what you choose to do, you should understand that the cost will rapidly approach (and likely pass) the cost of a mini, depending on how much the G4 cost and what you want it to do in the end.

More will follow as this message is near the word limit

Glen
