My understanding is that 24V (it doesn't need the stated 28V - only
24V) is required by the circuit that detects power on and the gigabit
won't start unless it detects 24V, which can, apparently, be supplied
by a wall adapter. I have not personally verified this. I talked to
someone who had used the wall adapter, but it blew after three weeks,
so he bought the gigabit power supply off ebay.
