I might be in need of a similar modification for my QS02 soon, which is why I was researching the same thing. From what I read, the later towers (certainly the QS & MDDs, not sure about earlier systems like the DA and GbE) definitely REQUIRE at least 12v on that pin to boot and even during sleep (which is why a PSU with 12V Standby power is needed) BUT don't need the whole +25V that the original PSU provided without an ADC-powered display connected. The only thing that concerns me a little is whether the 12VSB line carries sufficient amperage to use powered firewire devices (I'm certainly not about to start syncing my iPod over USB1 and I have no usable PCI slots for a 2.0 card). I believe they will though, as the 12VSB line on those Skyhawk ATX supplies is designed with the purpose of allowing optical drives to be powered while the computer is off or in standby for music playback. Working on the theory that the average optical drive can draw ~20W on the +12v rail, that means there would have to be sufficient power for most devices I could hook up. I hope.

But I don't need to do the mod unless the stock 344W PSU can't cope with the reflashed 6800 Ultra and 2 7200RPM HDs I already have in the machine in addition to the dual CPU upgrade card ;)

I hear the consensus is that the Gigabit and later models do not require
the 28V unless using ADC or powered FireWire devices. But, has anyone
verified this? If not, I will be verifying this within the next 2 weeks. If it will work, I will exclude a 24V external power supply from an order I am about to
place.
