Are you sure you don't have something moved right over the trash can? I do that 
sometimes when I miss the trash icon by a few pixels while dragging something 
there.

Mouse down over the trash can, or whatever the icon looks like, and drag it to 
the side and see if you get two items.

Click once on it and do a File_GetInfo to see if it really is the trash can.

Use Finder_file_make alias and move that away. See if you can open the trash 
there.

You got me beat by 4 years. I'm working on Linux.

I'm pretty sure the two trash icons are stored as resources in the Finder 
application. Unless you have been messing with ResEdit I can't imagine them 
changing without other serious bugs occurring in Finder. You may have to do 
some reinstalling if the resource is actually bad.

The only software I ever saw that purposely does things like that is "the 
Grouch" which stopped working circa system 5.
