You mentioned that you have spent nearly $2,500 on upgrades, for that
you could have purchased a new G5 dual 2 gig or one of the new G5
dual cores. All of the complaining is due to the fact that you are
trying to run modern applications on older machines. We all know
this is the low end Mac list. I love the information that I glean
from it, but I sure don't use a 'lowendmac' as my main platform. I
use, as referenced above a dual 2 gig G5 which I've maxed out the RAM
at 4 gig. It runs everything really well. I also use a G4 ibook 1.3
gig. Now I *do* have 2 older Macs a Blue & White 450 and a 400 mhz
Indigo iMac. They're fun to play with, but I certainly wouldn't
depend on them to get my work done. Neither of them can even run the
applications the I use on a daily basis. Yes, they can both run OS X
10.4.3 but with G3 processors at 450 and 400 mhz respectively, they
can't run the games I play. They can't run Aperture, they can't run
iMovie or iDVD (they can but v e r y s l o w l y). They're my
toys. I buy them, upgrade them, using a lot of the info form this
list and then give them away to people in need. Nothing is more
gratifying than the looks on their faces. Several have go on to
purchase new G4's and G5's.
Moral of story. Stop complaining that your older Mac can't do what
you want it to. If you're going to run an older Mac, accept it's
limitations. There was a thread earlier about the iSight which just
won't work on most of the older G3's and early G4's...it's a fact,
they're just not built for it no matter how much you upgrade.
You also mentioned OS 9. It is dead. If you have been following the
various threads regarding the Intel Macs to be released this month,
there will probably to no OS 9 on them at all. I'm really sorry to
have to report this to you. We have to face facts though, OS 9 won't
be around in the future. You mention that you are having much less
difficulty with your PC's. You might want to stop and re-consider
what it is that you want to do. First thing I would do is stop
throwing away money on upgrades that are getting you no results.
Save! Invest in a NEW computer. Decide if you want the stability
and security of the Mac OS or if you want to take your chances with
Windows. What you describe below sounds like you've made some bad
decisions, it's time to start making some good ones. This is a new
year. Make a new start. Computing on any platform should be
pleasant not frustrating...at least it is for me.

Happy New Year,
Today, I have made my NYR (New Year’s Resolution), and it does not
include any Macintoshes, whatsoever. Today out of frustration, I
have decided to give up on Macs.. Taking the advice of the members
of the PCI PowerMacs, and G3 lists, I managed to update these
machines – although not easily, and keep them current. Within the
last three months, these machines have just decided to go their own
route, and do some of the dumbest things. Too numerous to mention,
the problems are frustrating nonetheless. What is particularly
frustrating is that an OS such as 9.x has been basically forgotten
by the computing industry, not to mention Apple. I have one Win95
machine that I am able to use hardware and sotfware slated only for
WinXP machines without any problem. My recent upgrades for the
Macs included G4 700 and 600mhz processors, Two combo USB, FW, and
ATA1000 cards, 4 HDs, and over 2GB of additional memory over the
past two years. These hardware purchases were made IAW manufactu!
rers recommendations as well as the advice of members of this list
group. After spending almost $2.5K on these upgrades and not to
mention hardware (I “had” an 8600, 9600, and two G3 mini-towers), I
decided it is not economically feasible to keep “throwing” money at
these machines with the constant problems these Macs have returned
as a result of the upgrades. In comparison have spend less than
$300 - total on my PCs over the last year! Try and update one of
my Macs with something “current” supposedly, and all hell breaks
loose. Well as of today, that hell has come to a head. In
closing, if one good thing did come of my experience with these PCI
Macs, it was that I managed to teach myself basic video editing
with iMovie. Oh, and that brings another upgrade fiasco to mind.
My upgrade to Adobe Premier – it ran like sh** on all previously
mentioned Macs. Now, I have all this beige plastic, and green
expansion innards, that I cannot even donate, because its’
performance is so!
unpredictable. Better I trash it all! Despite my harsh
experiences, those dedicated to using these “ancient” Mac have my
best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
