You're all obviously more patient than me! My Quicksilver '02 800
with the stock CPU feels painfully slow to me, even with the 6800
Ultra in there! Once I finally manage to sell my Mac mini, it's
getting dual 7457s!
If it wouldn't be too rude to ask, what do you do with your cpu
that tries your patience?
I guess I don't even have the slowest Mac on this list, by some way,
but .... web browsing,
Can't see this, it is really not high cpu intensive, mostly the
pipe (bandwidth) to the internet surely..
work on 12mpixel images in
Photoshop, music production in Logic Pro & playing in GarageBand...
Well, yeah, I guess. I have worked on 80 and even larger MB pics on
a 7300 with PS 5 and it never really bothered me. There are actions
that automate things, batching while you go for a cuppa and it is
all manageable, I imagine it would be much faster on these G4 QSs
(I am yet to really find out on mine, a 933 with a 2MB backside and
1G of RAM. You have these last two (in my opinion as. if not more,
important as cpu MHz) maxed?
David Elmo
Well, I have the RAM maxxed at 1.5GB with good CAS2 RAM. The stock
800MHz single CPU module in the QS '02 lacks L3 cache, which is well
known to be a severe performance killer for the 7450/7455 with only
256KB of L2 - I bought this machine to upgrade though; I never really
intended to use it with the stock CPU.
The only reason I haven't got round to selling off the mini and
sorting out a nice PowerForce57 Dual for this machine is that I've
been away over Christmas. In some ways that's a good thing though,
because I think I'll wait now until after MWSF to see if one of the
manufacturers release dual 7448 based upgrades - I feel the 1MB of on
die L2 ought to negate the lack of L3, not to mention the fact that
they'll use less power (a good thing since I've already got a GeForce
6800 Ultra and 3 HDs sapping the poor 344W stock PSU) - the whole I
was looking at 1.2GHz dual '57s in the first place is that they
outbench the 7447 based upgrades at higher clockspeed by some way.
Jason, this racy talk is making my head spin. 2MB of backside is
better than 1. When I bought this QS of mine (933) I wanted more
backside than I had on my 7300 (1MB... which was terrific). So I
looked till I found a 2MB one. For psychological reasons as much as
any other reasons. I have rarely been held up by my Macs. I was on an
SE 30 sometimes when it - satisfyingly actually - took time to
compute something from a program I had made in MS QuickBasic (Mac)...
I like to boast about my backside cache. Did I mention I have 2MB?
Well, I have. And it is there every day.
