Hebrew, Shrebrew... if it says the writing can go right to left
then I expect to be able to make it go "werberhS ,werbeH" . But it
does not do this at all! I say yes to Rich text, I select right to
left and guess what it does? Something incredibly pathetic, weak as
piss (to use a common Australian expression): it puts the phrase on
the right side of the page. Same thing happens to actual typing new
words, they simply start at the right of page, and move to the left
as you type to make room for the latest keystroke at the far right
edge. But they are just normal looking and right justified. Apple
really have stuffed up bad eh? Admit it!
Actually, Apple didn't stuff anything up. I'd only expect Windows to
screw things up that badly. English is a left-to-right language. If
you switch the language to Hebrew or Arabic, the letters will indeed
behave like you're expecting. This behavior is determined by the
character set/localization you're using, not just the menu setting.
Apple promises to write right to left. Right? And it does not deliver
this. There are hidden conditions. The language has to be just right.
If the language has to be just right, why bother to have the command,
why does it not simply default to right to left when you break out in
Arabic (as a mad Englishman like me is wont to do from time to time).
Yeah, sure there would be a notice to ask you if you really want to
go to rich text, but that would be it. They have stuffed up, here was
an opportunity for Apple to do /exactly/ what they promised and they
did not. There would be less of an air of stuff up if English did not
get right justified with the command (what on earth is the point of
this?). I would expect some normal Apple elegance or wit like a
notice to say: "Hey, you trying to be funny, Pal? You can't do this
automatically in a left to right language. If you wanna fool about,
damn well type things backwards. Get off our backs will you?" Now
that kind of straight talking and coding would avoid the stuff up.
