It appears they're going to continue to sell both architectures side by side, at least for a bit. Both are listed at the Apple Store.

And, sadly, your wife's video iPod would have worked just fine with the USB 1.0 port, just a LOT slower...

I'm thinking the rule is "never buy a new mac after Labor Day..." :-)
