Absolutely! No question about it. It takes some time (and some money) to settle on a set of tools you feel confident about and some weekly housekeeping hours to apply them.

But... I feel very confident about my PCs capabilities and reliability. It took a lot of learning but today I feel as confident about my PCs as I feel about my Beige G3 running OS9.

I am sure that I would feel as confident about OSX had I taken the time, lots of it, to learn about it. Sure! But I chose to go mainstream when Apple forced me to make a decision and do think Windows was the right choice. I have just so many hours to learn about computers. I previous experiences with Unix servers were not inviting, to say the least.

I'd still be using a current version of the old MacOS as my main platform had that been a choice. I'm sure it would still be an improved great OS, at least for the rest of us.

I know it's naughty to generalize, but I feel confident in saying that if
Macintosh users found their computing experience to take "constant effort
and discipline," they wouldn't be Macintosh users for long.

You may be right. The risk of malware and viruses is not in the day-to-day thoughts of Mac-only users. I hope that continues to be the case. Were it not for my constant attention to my Windows computers they'd be shot, while my daughter's iMac runs mostly flawlessly and my G3 is rock-solid with little and no housekeeping.

On the other hand, virtually all information about Windows and Windows-hardware issues can be found by Googling. Just write the error message text between quotes in the search box. And if I need an external resource, they are abundant and cheap. Hardware is swappable in most cases and cheap. Good reasons all of them if you need computers for work.

Regards.
