Stop bickering, before youve even had your hands on one of these!
Those of you who have legitimate software packages will of course get
upgrades. How many designers stll work in Photoshop 3.0 or
Illustrator 88? Or for that matter, 68040-Macs, pre-PowerPC? AND my
brand new PB 12" is not landfill material yet. I have been using
second hand macs for many years now, all of them stationary. My
latest acquisiton was a desktop G3, that got two new HDs (pulled the
Zip) and a FireWire/USB-card. 9 years old, runs OSX not fast, but
well enough for me to learn it. Going 9 -> X was more of a challenge
than 7->8->9.
My portable van do DVSs, and has, well, become part of me now. Just
like my mobile phone. Naked without them.
So: The existing macs aren’t dead yet! Never heard of LowEndMac? Macs
rule because they WORK, and have the cool factor to boot. I am NOT
worried about the Mac future. Say what you want about Jobs, but the
shares value speaks. Money speaks, and in a capitalist world, thats
the word that matters. Jobs does well as a CEO. Mac stores are
popping up now like mushroooms after a rainfall, the iPods luring
people in to gawk at white & metal laptops with funky accessories.
And some of these gawkers get over it and fork out enough dough to
take one home to drool over and actually do stuff with.
Eventually, one must come down from the fence and make a decision. I
got me a Powerbook, and I do not regret it. So what if the new Intel
books are 4 times as fast? I’ll look into it in 7 years time when
this machine shows its age. Until then, happy computing. Apple is NOT
dead.
