Thanks for the response, Bruce.
Your last preference listing (loginwindow.plist) I would first
suspect as
the culprit, as the status bar window seems to give up right when the
"setting login window" report fails to show.
Booting in Safe mode (the shift keystroke) does not yield a
successful boot
up (same blue window).
Any way to get at that pref. in verbose mode?
Here's a useful compendium of things to do in single user mode:
<http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS-X/commandline/single-user.html>
You may also have a corrupted netinfo database, which can be fixed as
shown here:

BEWARE.
Unix has been jokingly described as "user friendly, just really picky
about who it makes friends with."
This is doubly true of working in single-user mode. Things can be
really jacked up if you do things wrong, so be careful, proofread
what you type, know the difference between 1 and l, 0 and O, and
think twice before hitting enter.
10.4 is far easier to deal with in this regard, because the boot disk
allows terminal access to the system, with a lot more commands
available compared to single user mode.
