BEWARE.

Unix has been jokingly described as "user friendly, just really picky about who it makes friends with."

This is doubly true of working in single-user mode. Things can be really jacked up if you do things wrong, so be careful, proofread what you type, know the difference between 1 and l, 0 and O, and think twice before hitting enter.

10.4 is far easier to deal with in this regard, because the boot disk allows terminal access to the system, with a lot more commands available compared to single user mode.
