I may be able to get a really good deal on a dual processor Quicksilver (not sure of speed) that is mostly barebones. Could anyone speculate or speak from experience what it would do if it was run through a basic test (powered on) either without video/RAM/HD or with a PC video card and some RAM?

No RAM or bad RAM - instead of a BONG you should get a thud or breaking glass sound.

If RAM is ok, then the self-check moves on to other components.

No video - the self-check doesn't check.

An incompatible video card might cause the bong to not happen, as the video iface won't init... but I'm not sure.

I have been told the machine powers up and then just powers off. Does this sound like a bad motherboard or power supply, or is the machine just unhappy with the obviously (at least to me) incorrect components?

Could be the components. Could be a processor or cache issue too.

Pull the PRAM battery for a min. Make sure it's either fresh or at least has decent voltage before putting it back in.

Pull the RAM and video card then hit the power button... If you get that breaking glass sound, that means the processor and cache are talking ok.
