Cannot you pick up another HD to put in and go with of??
HD's in the 10 - 40 GB region are going for flee-market- prices nowadays.
I just bought 5 Maxtors (brandnew in box) of 40 GB each for € 30 (= US$ 36)
together to "push up" the iMacs (SL 350/400) of my grandkids a little bit.
You can save your Ubuntu-HD and install a fresh OS on another HD for the
price of ? beers. Up to you!
