Hello Bruce and thanks for your reply and useful link. This is for a G4, right? In a Beige originally equipped with a G3?
Any ZIF, G3 or G4, can be installed in a G3 beige. However, the bus multiplier is different in the Beiges than it is in th B&W or G4 Yikes, so, properly jumpered, a G4 running at 450Mhz in one of those should run at 466 Mhz in a Beige.
I did everything in the link, except for pressing the cuda switch.
That is an absolutely critical step; it tells the system that a new CPU has been installed. I'm somewhat surprised it ran at all.
The jumpers tell it what speed to run at. Those HAVE to be set properly, or it won't run correctly. Moreover, the settings for G4 ZIFS are DIFFERENT than those for G3's. If you used the G3 jumper block with the G4 ZIF, you will not get what you desired.
Hardware directions are directions, not a vague recipe. You need to do *all* the steps, in the correct sequence and with attention to detail, or it won't work properly.
Sigh: I asked in the past here if I could put the pulled-to-be G4 from my soon-to-arrive Sawtooth in my Beige G3 and was told that it can't be done.
The processor in a Sawtooth is not a ZIF module, but an entirely separate daughtercard, and is NOT interchangeable.
The processor from a Yikes or any of the 3rd party G4 offerings *can* work...I had OWC's 450Mhz G4 running happily at 466 in my Beige.
