I haven't priced the USB 802.11b adapters, this one may or may not be more $ but it does a lot:

D-Link DWL-630AP

a neat, matchbox-sized USB or AC powered box, has a switch on it-- does client mode, acts as a WAP, or as a router. 802.11g.

You just need to have an ethernet jack on the computer you are hooking it to.

I used it just this weekend in client mode to let me wirelessly download all the WinXP updates to a desktop I was building (desktop had no wireless of its own). I've put it on my Mac laptop, too, just to test.

You configure it though a web interface, no drivers needed, so it will work on anything with an ethernet jack and a web browser.

Setting it in client mode (as you would be) is pretty straightforward, although if you are doing MAC address filtering you have to be aware it has 2 MAC addresses-- one for the LAN side (printed on the back of the device) and ANOTHER for the wireless side (NOT printed on the device- you have to look at your home WAP access pages to get this MAC address, if you wish to whitelist it. grrr...).

I love this little toy ^H^H^H tool. When I'm traveling, if they don't have wireless in the room, I can hook this up to the single wired connection and both our laptops have access, etc. And it worked great in client mode this weekend (first time I've tried that). And it is TINY.

I had been thinking of getting a USB 802.11 adapter but this will do fine.

HTH. I think this was $35 or $40 after rebate (I got it in July).

Hello,

It appears that Belkin no longer sells a wireless USB
adapter that is compatible with Macs - would anyone
know someone who does?

Also, I am getting this for a G3 iMac, and was
wondering if I should just get an 802.11b since it'll
be connected to a USB 1.1 port. Or, would I get more
performance from an 802.11g even with USB 1.1? (My
router is g)

Thank you!
Greg
