On some date and time in the past, Anders Fager wrote questioningly:
Some stuff.
• What is the "console" for and where can I figure out what it
means? Right now "Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1192 and
product ID=8717" is not very helpful
The console is the place where the OS writes it's errors and other
information. Unless you know Unix and OS X very well, it's less than
useful in day to day operation, as many of the dire-looking messages
aren't really dire at all.
When something goes wrong, you can often look here and diagnose the
problem.
The Console is also where you can view the various logs that are kept
by the system. Again, they're seriously Unix-speak, and unless you
know what they're talking about they're not really useful.
• What software does "software restore" restore?
Software restore restores the additional (non-OS) software that
shipped with your computer, things like AppleWorks, the games and
trial software that comes with it on the restore disks. You can use
software restore (in 10.4) to create bootable backups of your system.
There are Apple KB articles about it.
• Can I allocate more memory to some programs like I did in the old
days?
Not only can't you, you don't have to. Programs are allocated more
memory on need; this is one of the great advantages of OS X over the
old ways.
• In Mail, is there any way to kill och change the "At 1748,
etcetera, you wrote:" reply header?
Not that I can find in a cursory examination of the preferences.
However, you can always simply delete or type over that part...as I
did with this one. The date and time format is governed by the date
and time preferences for the whole computer, I think.
