At the risk of asking a stupid question: are you sure the Jaguar CD isn't actually a Jaguar DVD? Will other CDs work in the drive? I ask, because i think when I used to insert DVDs into my old B&W CD drive, it did next to nothing as well.

As for replacing, you simply get a new one, and put it in where the old one was. I don't know the take apart schematics for a beige, so someone else will have to provide those, but I usually wing it, and simply remove each screw on the old drive and place them in a pattern that is similar to the way they fit in the computer, unplug the various chords from the back of the drive (which may take a little work to do without simply muscling them out), the drive usually slides forward through the front of the case, so you may need to know how to remove the front panel on the computer as well. Once it's out, you do the exact reverse of the removal, and there you go, new drive.
I think most drives will work fine, at least in OS X without drivers.

Got detailed instructions on removal of the HD from the list. Now have a new problem. My CD tray has stopped working. It opens OK but when I try
to install any software, nothing happens.
No spinning noise. No icon on desk top, just dead. Also no Jaguar, I
operate on 9.2.

From the above I have concluded that I need to replace the CD unit. Now,
I also have another Mac, a mini tower a G3/266. My questions are:
1) Can I remove the CD unit from one and install it in the other?
2) If I can, is it a fairly straight forward job?
3) Need a referral to a site with detailed instructions how to do the
job.

Any help will be appreciated,

Richard in San Diego

Thanks,
