My q: can I download to his XP machine things like the Apple Tiger updates, usb them to my stick and put them on my X Quicksilver and it all work?
Certainly! But you need to be careful: Flat files, like .dmg, .sit, .zip, .bin, .hqx, .uu, .uue, .tar, .jpg, .gif,... will be fine. Files with resource forks, such as .sea or uncompressed installers, will be broken. The .sea files are recoverable tho - all you loose is the embedded expander app. So you can just drop them onto Expander and they'll work.
