With a QuickSilver G4 733 running OSX 10.3.9 Panther, I can put the machine, including hard drives, to sleep from the Apple Menu.

But when I set the System Preferences >Energy Saver >Sleep to any time other than "Never," this G4 does not go to sleep; harddrives keep spinning. I do not check the option to put the "hard disk(s) to sleep whenever possible." The display goes to sleep perfectly at whatever timing I set for it.

I have gone through a dozen articles at Apple's web site and the various items available in Finder Help. Thinking that my LAN hub and router activity was keeping the computer awake, I tested with the ethernet cable disconnected from the G4. No help there. I have usually Classic running. I turned it off, still no sleep.

Two other user group members report the same problem. I don't know what machines they have, but one said that his problem occurs only with iMovie running. I never use iMovie.

Any ideas here?

Thank you,
Al Poulin
