Hello Listas,

Being not new (62 haha) with Beiges, for still maintaining around 30 of
these beasts in all kind of customized installations. Never ever had any
problem I could not handle. But now I have one!

Beige G3 DT/266, ROM-rev. $77D.45F1, mobo 820-0991A, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB HD,
CD-ROM-, Zip- and floppy-drive standard. Display is an unbranded 17"
Flatscreen + VGA/Mac-adapt. (Already successfully used with several Mac's,
from PM 9600/350 up to a MacMini).
PCI/USB-card.
OS 9.2.2 (customized) clean installed.
Connected is a Tornado modem for dial-up internet (will be replaced by an
ADSL-conn. with a modem/router within 2 weeks) and an Epson 740.
The Mac is customized for a married couple (around 70), still running their
typewriting-shop!! They want to have a Mac running:
Outlook Express
Int. Expl.
iCab
Mozilla
Corel WP (yaya, very imp.!!!!)
M$ Office 2001
GraphicConverter
Adobe PS Elements
All licensed and updated.
So far the Mac!

Now the problem:
Starting up in a normal way will allways result in the appearance of this
floppy-icon with the blinking ?-mark. Even let'm go had no results.
Giving then the "3-finger-salute" will reboot the Mac absolutey fine and
flawlessly, doing all wanted.
Shutting down, waiting an hour or so, starting up will give the ?-mark
again.
To be short: I found out that to start this Mac in the easiest way is to
hold "Shift" down after the startup-boing just until the "Smiling-Mac"
appears. Leave "Shift" than immediately. The mac will start up now in the
desired way!

My question: What can/will cause this silly startup behaviour??

TIA for any idea,

Jo Hissel
