This is not really machine specific, it happened on a Ti Book and I sent the message to G-books, but I don't think it got there . . .so, here's the tale. I am trying to increase my understanding of the Permissions system on OSX, and have enabled a root user (System Administrator) account on my TiBook as well as the regular Administrator account. I'm thinking to myself (dunno why) mebbe I ought to set up a regular user account, so I can look at the distinctions among the three classes of User Accounts vis a vis Permissions. Okey Doke, and in a further leap of stunted imagination, I sez to myself, "I wonder how you go about locking up a volume, like the HD for instance, so that a regular user (perhaps a child) could not even open it? Hmmm, Well, I logged in as root, Got Info on the volume, looked into the details of the Permissions for it, and before you could stop me, selected "No Access" for Others. Then I logged off. It got really dark. It booted into the console. It did not panic, but I did. I logged in as root, successfully, but when it came to the root# prompt, I typed in reboot . . .and it got really really dark. It ran through the boot sequence, but then went back to a black screen (after I poked at it some more). By great good luck (not planning) I have two volumes on the HD . . .so, after a bit more faunching about, I hit on the idea of booting with the option key down, selected the other volume, booted, logged in as root and (whew) changed the permissions back on the Dark Volume. Scart me. Question: at the root# prompt is there a command that would have be more useful than reboot? -- All the Best,
