In reply to Greg Doudna and Russell Gmirkin:

On Friday October 26, 2001 a letter from Greg Doudna was posted on
qumran_origin
yahoo e-list group, a Barbara Thiering discussion list, where she used
to post.
I was there to try and understand how she justified her readings, which never
persuaded me. I quote Doudna: "...my 4QpNah book, which should be out by
December, has
the real solution to the identity of the Teacher of Righteousness, for
the first
time in the Qumran field. :-)" So my memory did not fail me this time.
There was no
fabrication. Later, that post was removed at GD's request. I saved it before
then.

I noted R. Gmirkin's reading of the Wicked Priest being "called by the name of
truth when he first arose" as belonging to the same group was the same as
Barbara Thiering's interpretation. Indeed it is. Wm. Brownlee's pHab
book lists
many interpretations. I don't own BT's books, but can get the reference if
requested. I also noted that RG's characterization of pesher language (ane 1
Sept 2006) as "demonstrably exact and accurate" was unlike how many of
us might
characterize it, but resembled the view of Barbara Thiering, as indeed
it does.
I accept RG's statement that he did not learn these from BT. I merely pointed
out that she expressed these ideas first.

Though I have posted there since then, N.P. Lemche, Copenhagen, on ane did
caution the DSS discussion which included me and Russell Gmirkin.

I have expressed the view that Hyrcanus II was too late and too weak, among
other reasons, to be TR. Russell Gmirkin, if my memory serves, also has
expressed the view that Hyrcanus II was not the Teacher. (Additional
bibliography if needed on request.)

best,
Stephen Goranson
