Hi, Thanks for the advice so far. What actually happened was that I was downloading a driver for the scanner, which was followed by the "optimizing feature" &[EMAIL PROTECTED] The damage seems to be deeper than I thought. I can't connect to the internet, can't startup from my Panther install disc (just get a blank screen, even though the disc is recognized when I start up from the HD). Classic won't load; I get messages that "I do not have access privilege to various files, despite having signed in with the administrator's password. I ran disk utility, and repaired some permissions, but to no effect. I've tried to start in verbose mode, but that doesn't appear to work. I was operating under "file vault", and when I try to turn it off I keep getting the message that there is not enough memory to do that, despite having dumped just about everything except the OS. I can live with the loss of what is on the computer, but would much rather retrieve it. I wonder if DiskWarrior or some other 3rd party software might help. I also wonder about putting in a much bigger hard drive, then copying the whole of this HD to a partition that is maybe 50 to 100 percent larger, to give me some more space to try and turn off File Vault, and/or run some 3rd party utility on it. However, I also wonder if there is some sort of virus or worm, etc on this drive, if it might wreak havoc on a new drive. The worst part of this all is that I'm stuck using a PC!! TIA for any thoughts. JK -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]
