So are we to not use an external hard drive with any other OS than
Leopard once it's been used with Leopard since using an external with
Leopard is messing with the drive been used with other OSes? All
either dredbob or my neighbour did was copy files, and both
dismounted their hard drives correctly. Something's rotten in
Cupertino if that's the case.

I have an external 120GB F/Wire pocket drive which is a SuperDuper clone of my
work G5's disk (10.5.5), and it's kept up-to-date with an incremental backup
before I leave for home.
My own G5 at home has 1 disk with 10.5.5 and another with 10.4.11 so I still
have the "OS9 under Classic" option.
I've been using this pocket drive for over a year - under both Leopard and
Tiger with nary a problem. There is no inherent problem with doing this.
The "Invalid Leaf Record" IS a screwed directory, but it's 99.999999999%
certain that it WASN'T caused solely by Leopard.
I've had this happen maybe twice or three times in the last 10 years, &
Diskwarrior's usually sorted it. Sometimes incorrectly dismounting a drive is
indeed the problem. Just because the icon's gone from the desktop does not
necessarily mean it's OK to yank the connector: it sometimes takes a second or
two (depending upon activity) for the drive to become fully idle - just watch
the disk activity lights if there are any & you'll see what I mean.
Meantime, trust Leopard:- I've been using it intensely since its release and I
find both it, and sharing removeables with 10.4 OK.
