Unless he has done the "Empty Trash" routine, they are still available, in one humungus mixed up folder called "Trash".
Double click on the 'Trash Can" and look through the 'trashed files' --- find the wanted file, and drag it back to wherever. [In 'Trash' there may be multiple files with the same name.
