I would guess your external drive was going bad, and your computer  
appeared to slow down, because it was waiting for a good  
communication with a failing hard drive.

Now that the external drive is, well, dead (?) ... your computer has  
"returned" to its original speed (which it never really lost).

Just guessing ... so don't start throwing things out (the window)  
just yet ...

Got any friends that could drop by and look and listen to get a  
better diagnosis?
