Check out the power switch area. There may be a short circuit.

While it is possible you have inadvertently setup some sort of
software loop creating this problem it seems unlikely you would not be
aware of making a change to an auto startup / shutdown sequence. Also
booting from the other disk image ( I just re-read the description)
would preclude that sort of cause.
