Hi again Listers, :::::blush::::: Ummmm...let's hope my Powerbook 5300 comes to my rescue again (it's the only way I have right now to send or receive email...) --
My experimenting with Charles's suggestion of removing certain extensions (and some obviously erroneous ideas of my own) to fix my "G4 won't boot and run in OS 9" problem has now resulted in a "loss" of OS X, too. I know I can get it back if I boot from my Tiger DVD and reset the startup disk, but I had a CD in it which I now cannot remove. The last time this happened, the suggestion from this list to "hold down the mouse and the power button on the Mac at the same time" worked, so I tried it again this time. It's not working now, and since my OS 9 is wrecked (the clean install I'd done this weekend is obviously messed up), I have no way to go into the Apple Menu to change back to OS X as my startup. I know, I know, I know, why don't I just give up on OS 9 (except to run Classic)?.....because it would make my life a whole lot easier if for this one task, if I COULD run on it still. My "do it on the iBook and move the file back to the G4 with the flash drive" workaround has gotten awful tiresome. It also irks the hell out of me that a machine whose capabilities specifically include dual booting/running BOTH OS 9 and OS X -- and did it wonderfully for two years -- just isn't doing it anymore. I also thought that holding down the mouse and the G4's power button simultaneously to make it spit out a CD was a G4 thing (regardless of OS), but is it OS X specific? Current situation which I must resolve ASAP (this is what I get for "experimenting") -- Having tried to boot from a copy of my "original" OS 9 system folder which I'd put on the OS X HD for safekeeping just prior to doing the OS 9 reinstall Sat night (and which my G4 had also been running Classic Mode from since then when I was in OS X), the Mac will ONLY boot in OS 9, and it boots, but as soon as the menu items and desktop icons appear, it locks up/freezes. I nerve-pinch shutdown, but even when I'm holding down the mouse key and power button at the same time, OS 9 just boots (and freezes) again -- and the G4 does not spit out the CD it's got so I can put my Tiger DVD in. There's no holes for paperclip eject. ...thanks everyone! ~Yersinia. (wow, this 5300 keyboard is so much better than the iBook's!)..... --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
