<The G3 B/W tower and several early G4 towers all use PC100 memory, but
Other World Computing distinguishes between G3 and Yikes on one hand,
and AGP and Gigabit on the other. They don't recommend using the same
RAM in all of these, and told me that the programming and design of
the memory cards are different.

Is this something I can "adjust" with DIMM First Aid? And what about
using a pile of old PC100 (or PC133) RAM salvaged from PC's and Macs
without knowing exactly where they came from?>

1. In my past experience of a few RAM upgrades from my BF's "Box O'RAM,"
if you have RAM sticks of a certain type, i.e., PC-100 SDRAM or PC-133
SDRAM, those RAM sticks will work in any Mac which shipped with that kind
of RAM. IMO, OWC problably lists and discusses their RAM that way because
most customers aren't going to know what kind the Mac they own needs, and
will want to know "what kind of RAM will be compatible with my Yikes?"
(or whichever Mac it is they have).

However, if you know what kind of RAM you need, any stick of that type
should work in your Mac. Sometimes, you can use a different kind, i.e.,
it will work, but not as "intended." The G3/266 Beige DT I had bought
from the Swap List had originally shipped with 32 MB of PC-66 SDRAM
(though will support third party low profile RAM sticks), and in the end
I had mine maxed out and it worked fine with three sticks of PC-100 SDRAM
(for a total of 768 MB). Now the bus speed on a G3 beige is 66 MHz, so
the PC-100s I had in there were a bit "slowed down" on account of that
(but still the machine loved that extra RAM), as compared to how they
would have worked in, say my B&W, which has a 100 MHz bus speed and
specifies PC-100 SDRAM. I could put a PC-133 stick in the B&W if I wanted
to and it would probably work just like putting PC-100 in the Beige did.
My G4 Quicksilver (to whom I gave two 512 MB PC-133 SDRAM sticks to max
it out) which I bought from OWC, and when I bought them, I went in with
"PC-133" on my mind, not "G4 Quicksilver 867," although I did see G4
Quicksilver on the web page while looking to place the order. The new RAM
was wonderful.

2. If you go to a site like www.everymac.com, you can look up the specs
on the Mac(s) you want to buy RAM for to find out what kind, as well as
how much they shipped with and how much you can max them. If you buy the
kind of RAM in the specs, you should be OK.

3. I've never heard of DIMM First Aid. Someone else will need to help you
with that. ;-)
