Better to test by pulling the 256 out too.

When you change where memory is you change if and what might cause  
problems.  The problem could be in the 256 but having the 512 in  
makes it noticeable.  Simply put if the memory error is a single bit  
or byte and you change things around that byte may end up holding  
information that is rarely used or won't cause noticeable problems.   
I've had it happen before.  It really helps to have several several  
sticks of each side so you can swap say one 512 Mb for another.  Then  
when one causes failure and the other doesn't you can at least be  
sure the one that causes failure is bad.  You can't be certain the  
other one is good, it may just not cause noticeable problems.

There is precious little used in the PRAM anymore.


What you do need to do when changing memory is push the button to  
reset the CUDA button on those machines that have it.  I don't know  
off hand which do and don't.
