Make sure your firmware is updated before you abandon OS 9; most
firmware updates are done with OS 9. What model Mac? If it is a beige
G3 and you want to run 10.3 or 10.4 you will need OS 9 to boot with
XPostFacto. Otherwise, it sounds like you don't need it. I kept an
inactive OS 9 drive for several years, finally removed it, and haven't
missed it since. I replaced it with a larger, newer drive for data
storage but I kept OS 9 on the old drive, stored safely in case I ever
had a old file or program that needed it. It's still sitting untouched
in the closet.
