The only third-party Ethernet adapter which is universally accepted  
by MacOS is the R8169.

You can get those for $8.99 ($2.99 when on sale) at Fry's Electronics.

The 8169 code has been built into MacOS X since at least 10.3.

There is a 10.2 driver available, and also a a MacOS 9 driver available.
