AFAIK the Realtek 8169 is a PCI adapter, not much use in the OP's iMac.


As to the OP's problem, a USB adapter is your only choice.  There are a 
number available, such as <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Macally/AIR2NET/>

A google search on "Mac USB Ethernet" will locate more info.
