Master and Slave are misnamed as these are really peers of each other. If there is only one drive, then it must be on the end of the cable, and it must be plugged as Master. If there are two drives, then either drive may be Master. Obviously the remaining drive must be Slave. These conventions have only partly to do with the normal functioning. During initialization and drive "roll call", the special 80-wire/40- pin cable allows the IDE chip to interrogate the drives and set itself up for best possible performance of both drives.
