I figured it was a plist, but searching for recent did not reveal it. I remember NOW that I disabled showing plists in search results, which explains that. But it doesn't explain why I could not find com.apple.recentitems.plist when I was scanning the folder, except for the coffee issue. I was hoping for the off chance that it worked like I seem to remember OS9's recent items, by keeping an alias in a recent items folder. That way, you could just open the folder and click on whatever doc you wanted to open.
