Bruce, I did something similar for a class reunion. In 1967 the my class album was printed on white semi slick linen paper. The texture made for bad scans. Set up a copy stand used my Nikon D70 to each of the 63 students. I then used iPhoto '06 to crop and pushed the black and white . . . the paper had yellowed and the original head shot were sepia than B&W. I set a custom crop box that corresponded to the vinyl ID pouch I used. I then moved the crop box to center on the face. Printed in gray tones to a B&W laser on photo paper. Turned out well. I tried PS but I had trouble with repeatability in the crop process. Just getting into iPhoto '09. From what I can tell I could repeat what I did with '06. Imagine '08 would work as well.
