My utility of choice, which I install on every Mac that passes through  
my hands, is SMARTReporter. Go here, among many download places, to  
get it:

I've had three clients report failing hard drives just this year alone  
when the normally green SMARTReporter icon in the menu bar turned red.  
I was able to replace the failing hard drives and save all their data  
because of this simple, free utility.
