When MS killed development of WMP for Mac, they gave the people that are producing FlipforMac the rights to improve and distribute the WMP codecs. So, yes, while you can download WMP 9 from Apple or MS, it has not been updated for a while. The system requirements state a min of 10.1.5 with 10.2 recommended. FlipforMac will get you the most up to date codecs that are AVAILABLE for the Mac, which is still behind the Win counterparts. I have Perian, FlipForMac and DivX installed along with VLC and mPlayer ( I almost never use the QuickTime player). Between all those, I have been able to play most all video formats except for a very few WMP files and an old intel format (Indeo 4 and 5, iirc) that has not been updated since I was on dialup at 1200 baud on my PowerBook 100.
