In the meantime you could download and install Ubuntu just to get this old Mac going. Ubuntu (or some Linux flavor), will likely be ubiquitous in the near future as hardware prices drop to a point that pricey software is economically unfeasible to sell. Apple may be able to hold a small island of high ground, but the groundswell from below will be a tide that even Microsoft can't weather in the long run. Might as well get familiar with Linux if you plan to be alive 10 or 15 years from now.
