You may have made a DVD of the ".dmg file" instead of burning the image of the .dmg onto a DVD. To burn an image file, you'll need to drag the .dmg into the left column of Disk Utility under the HD icons, then highlight the .dmg icon and press the "Burn" button in the upper left corner. I suspect your DVD's have a data file of the disk image on them? I also made this mistake the first time I tried to burn a DVD.
