As long as you do not put any desktop icons on the VGA monitor,  
everything will be fine. If you put icons on the VGA, your LCD  
desktop will be rearranged when the VGA is disconnected.

Any palettes should reappear on the lcd when the VGA monitor is off  
IF the program you are using is properly written.

Remember, the Mac OS has been designed to deal with multiple monitors  
ever since the Mac II, so Apple has had a long time to get it right.
