In case of the trouble you described, I always start cleaning the heads. To
do this I use a Lens Cleaner CD. It's a CD, with 2 small brushes, which
works with every CD/CD-RW/DVD/DVD-RW device I ever had on hands (must be
around 150 in the last 5 yrs I guess). The best one I ever used/use is the
Philips CD lens cleaner SBC AC300. I just bought a new/spare one for Euro 8
(US$ 10,35). Search the web for your neighbourhood.

This is the easiest and fastest way to start with and also the most common
and probable cause of your troubles.
