Its not rare really. Some developers prefer not to number 1.0 or above
where others would be up to version 3. Its just a style of doing
things. For instance if OSX had been versioned in this style 10.1
would have been maybe 10.0.1 and 10.2, 10.0.2, etc. Some developers
actually stop around 0.2 or 0.3, believe it or not.
In this case I am not sure what the strategy means. It could mean the
end of ppc support, it could mean that the project as a whole is
considered complete and the team is breaking up, in which case someone
may do minor updates or take it over and/or big changes in the program
will ensue shortly.
The program is called VLC, Video Lan is the project name. It is
basicly a Linux program ported to osX, which means the culture is a
bit different for some mac users ---

Myself I use 0.8.6 in Tiger and it works great, I see no need to
upgrade. Also my experience says never use anything with a double zero
ending, but that may be a personal preference. Anyway the 1.0 thing
means very little positive significant other than perhaps there was
some publicity pressure due to ignorance in the OSX world...
They have been saying for a long time, don't expect VLC to work very
well on a g3. The best thing about VLC is their excellent g4 support
(besides the freedom derived from free software, I mean) -- that
enables one to play many things on a slower g4 that would be skippy
with other players.
There is a plug-in for the 0.8.6 version BTW (not in newer versions
currently) which might be able to serve as a better flash player in
browsers ...
