Open Console.app (it's in /Applications/Utilities).  Set it to view 
system.log.  Then plug in the devices and see what error messages are 
thrown.

Might be worth trying to plug them in directly - no hub etc.

Ok.  So they are known good.

Doubtful.  Most likely there's a signal problem -- too much on the 
USB, so it can't get enough power for that device.  The error 
messages in the system.log will help to figure it out.
