I have had this problem when there was a malformed spam email. If you  
rebuild the trash mailbox that sometimes helps.

Select the trash mailbox. If you have multiple accounts set up you  
have to do this for each one. Hit the triangle next to the trash to  
select individual accounts.
Then go to Mailbox->rebuild and do that for each one.
