Apologies if I sound like a newb here but I just discovered this... Invoke Time Machine.
Select a file or folder, click on the gear icon in the window. ONe of the selections is to 'Delete all copies from backups'. Came in handy, I'd had a very large folder on my desktop of user accounts to archive, and it took several days.
