Ok...

The girlfriend got a spiff new Macbook to join the old G4 which is
kept wheezing and barely alive by me with help from this list though
no blame shall go to the list when the old G4 finally croaks as it is
always threatening to any minute these days.

Previous to this, the modem got the DSL line (apparently a phone
cable) from the wall, then an ethernet cable ran from the modem to the
G4 and the G4 connected to the good old HP 2355 all-in-one printer/
scanner/copier and though the computer wheezed and sputtered, scanning
and printing were never a problem

To use the existing DSL for the new little hotrod, we got an Airport
Extreme wireless router. I set it up like the guy at the mac store
said. That is, I ran the ethernet cable to the router (to the WAN
input as per instrux). I ran another ethernet cable I bought from the
router to the computers ethernet input. I took the USB connector for
the printer from the hub I'd had it in and plugged it into the USB
output on the router.

Stuff can print from the Macbook via the network I set up, beamed to
the router, sent to the HP, etc., it's all good. After a lot of trial
and error fussing, stuff will print from the G4. But when I bring up
the scan utility in the G4, I get an error message the scanner can't
be found.

Let the games begin.
