Did you install the latest 9.7.1 drivers:

It has been a downfall for HP, at least for printers & Mac OS X. The  
old printers were the gold standard, bomb proof almost. Now, the OS X  
software just doesn't work and the new printers are a giant hassle. I  
think I reinstall the drivers and "add printer" at least 50% of the  
time I need to print with a newer HP printer. They still use  
installers from the OS 9 days on Leopard 10.5. The permissions are  
always screwed up. I think your advise to buy a new printer is good  
advise, but I don't know what to buy? I suspect Korean laser printers  
perhaps?
