I'm sure we can help but I'm also sure we'll need more information:

Are you running an application when you try to open a file? If so what is its
name and version?

Protocols are things like HTTP for web pages and FTP for sending files. I
suspect your usage of the word protocol is something else like a particular
recording format for entertainment files but I can't tell.

Are you trying to open a file from a Finder window? Finder is the application
that comes up when you start your machine. If that's the case you will need to
have the appropriate application where Finder can find it. What is the
extension - after the dot - for a file you're trying to open?

At first you sounded like a UNIX guru who never operated a graphical user
interface like Apple's. Are you? The open command in Terminal.app can specify
an application with the -a option but not all applications can handle that
well. The word unscriptable in the error message is something I have never
seen. Is AppleScript involved?
