Dashboard with nothing loaded still sucks up 40 MB real memory. 
That's my big objection to it.

Back in the days of the Classic Mac OS, there were things called Desk 
Accessories (DAs).  They were tiny applets that did useful things, 
and could be called up easily.  Dashboard is Apple's reincarnation of 
the DA.  The bad news is that Dashboard is nowhere as versatile as 
separate DAs were, because it's really a honking big javascript 
engine.  sigh.

There are some nice widgets available.  But I find the memory and 
lack of versatility to be a killer.  So I try to find small 
applications that will do the same jobs....

Yes, to a point.

It is so awesome to see the look on my housemate's face when my 
300-MHz Smurf load web pages as fast or faster than his umpteen-GHz 
PeeCee.  LOL
